These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained running.
